Songs of Remembrance

The multimedia project "Songs of Remembrance" focuses on the impact of climate change on marine and terrestrial life, agriculture, and traditional local culture in Tainan creating an immersive music performance and exhibition from a multi-sensory perspective. Starting from the ecological investigation of Tainan Qigu and Tainan coastline, I will visit local environmental research and volunteer organizations to collect information about land crabs, mangroves, lagoons, oyster sheds, fish crocodiles, black-faced spoonbills, coral reefs, algae and materials that are closely impacted by climate crisis. The exhibition and performances will include  field recordings, videos, photographs, and original composition and singing that collectively form a commemorative song about the ecological environment and community stories of Tainan that artists and the public are engaged in.

"Songs of Remembrance" uses music performances, sound installations, musical instrument production, photography exhibitions, projections and videos to create three exhibitions. The main exhibition "Requiem" commemorates the local species and cultures that have disappeared or are on the verge of extinction due to climate impacts, such as the melting and bleaching of corals, the drought and warming faced by oysters and fish, the disappearance of land crabs, the shrinking of lagoons, etc. Through a combination of field recording, electronic music, vocal singing, etc., a requiem about remembrance and prayer will be played live. Exhibition 2 "Coastline Suite Coastline Suite" records locations which are most affected by sea level rise - the lagoon, Sicao Tunnel, Anping Castle, and Relanja City ruins. Through coastline maps, audio recordings, photography, and animated projection, the artist will create an immersive experience, allowing the audience to feel the impact of rising sea levels on the environment and culture. Exhibit 3 "Let Nature Sing" calls for less man-made noise and light. Through the switching of light and dark, the sounds and waves of human cruise ships and industry, the black-faced spoonbill, and the "quiet silence" of land crabs, the contrast invites the audience to listen and protect the original sound of nature. In addition to the three exhibitions, the artist also plans to conduct public workshops on musical instrument-making and playing: using fossils of native plant organisms (such as algae, shells), waste from fishery and agriculture (such as oyster sheds, oyster racks, fishing net materials), Musical instruments are made from recycled materials from marine and eco-tourism waste, and both adults and children are invited to interact and create music together. "Songs of Remembrance" hopes to reshape historical buildings that imprints of colonial history and capitalism into the commemoration of the local ecological environment and the action of local community, inviting the public to reflect and recreate their songs and dialogues with climate change and local environment.
